Code Ninjas is a new coding education centre in Newbury and we were recently invited along to the grand opening. Situated on London Road (close to Pets at Home), Code Ninjas aims to teach children to code while building their own video games. They will also learn analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Code Ninjas’ programmes are for children aged 5-14.

The grand opening took place over the May Bank Holiday weekend and we took our eager seven year old (J) along with us. Upon arrival we were greeted by a ‘Sensei’ and J was given a goodie bag. Several interactive task stations were set up inside the ‘dojo’ and the children were guided through them by the Senseis and given a stamp once they had completed a task at each station.

Tasks included a video game where J needed to enter the code to make the character move and collect gems. This was followed by a rainbow colour mat – a sensor ‘ring’ was placed on J’s finger and when it connected with a certain colour it played a musical note, with each colour representing a different note. J also built a circuit, used a tablet to control a robotic ball and programmed a remote-control robot. One of her favourite tasks was using a robotic arm to pick up bean bag characters and then drop them onto a target. Everything was very well organised and Covid safety measures were in place with a one-way system, face coverings and each station being sanitised after use. J enjoyed completing her tasks and after our visit said, ‘I definitely want to go back to the coding place,’ so it got a big thumbs up from us!

Code Ninjas offers two coding programmes: Code Ninjas JR for ages 5-7 and Code Ninjas Create for ages 7-14.  On the JR programme children learn coding fundamentals through play with video game building and hands-on tasks such as circuits. The Create programme teaches coding languages and includes robotics projects. It is self paced and children advance through the course by working towards different coloured wristbands, from white belt to black belt. The centre is open in the evenings and at the weekends so children can drop in at a convenient time to work through their course. Code Ninjas also run camps during the school holidays.

Details of the courses and camps offered by Code Ninjas Newbury can be found on the website: www.codeninjas.co.uk/newbury-brk-uk.
