diddi dance classes run throughout the UK for boys & girls from 18 months up to 5 years. The West Berkshire franchise is run by mum Lisa Jenkins and classes take place at different locations throughout the region such as Sulhamstead Village Hall, The Dolphin Centre in Pangbourne and The Cornwell Centre in Tilehurst. Classes have recently launched at Speen Hall in Newbury and we took our WestBerkshireMums four year old along to see what she thought!

The session we attended was 45 minutes of structured fun featuring bells, hoops, ribbons, a funky soundtrack and lots of different dance moves! It was led by our enthusiastic and friendly teacher Natalie who was great with all of the children. Although it was structured it was relaxed and informal with none of the children being put under pressure. diddi dance classes explore 16 different dance themes such as jive, disco and Bollywood; the theme for our session was hip hop. The class began with each of the children waving to Natalie to ‘register’ their attendance before some freestyle dance moves and shaking our body parts when the music stopped, a great way to get the little ones warmed up. There were then various different activities including galloping on horses, jingling bells, making shapes with ribbons, using hula hoops in a number of different ways (including as pretend puddles) and of course some hip hop moves! These included break dancing and an arm wave chain.

The children learn other skills with diddi dance, not just dance moves. One of the activities involved two different coloured bells which were first placed on each child’s wrist and then each foot to help them learn colours and their left from their right. There was also counting – in English and in French – and the classes help with social skills such as listening and turn taking. Parents & carers are encouraged to join in during diddi dance sessions to share the fun with their children. Our little one had a fantastic time; she enjoyed all aspects of the class but declared the ribbons to be her favourite part!
