A new theatre school has opened in Newbury and West Berkshire Mums went for a visit, taking along our eager four year old. Ragtime Theatre School is located at Ace Space on St Nicholas Road and offers professional training in musical theatre for children aged 4-12. The school is run by Newbury born Georgia Oldman who has performed in many shows around the UK, including in the West End. Classes run on a Saturday morning during term time and consist of the Mini School (‘Raglettes’) for 4-6 year olds (9.30am-10.15am) and the Main School for 7-12 year olds (10.30am-1.30pm). Exam sessions are also available for 7-12 year olds on a Saturday afternoon.

We took our little one to the Raglettes class which featured music and songs from the film Moana; a big hit with her as it is her favourite film! The main focus of the Mini School is fun and this was definitely evident during our visit – the session was 45 minutes of dancing, acting, singing and lots of other fun activities. It began with all of the children sitting in a circle and using their fingers to be ‘frogs’ doing various things such as going to the disco. The Raglettes mascot (Pua from Moana’s brother) then made an appearance and this was followed by some funky music which the children danced, clapped and jumped along to. A ‘Magic Mirror’ came out (which you could only see if you were magical!) and the children were encouraged to look in the mirror and copy what they could see.Ragtime photo 1 444x250The first Moana song to appear was Maui’s ‘You’re Welcome.’ Georgia showed the children some dance moves and actions to go with the song which they then put to the music. A few lines from Moana’s song ‘How Far I’ll Go’ were sang by Georgia using a ‘Magic Microphone’ which was then put into the middle of the children so they could sing the next word. There was more singing & dancing, a trip on a magic carpet to the Island of Te Fiti and an appearance from a magic box! Each child was given a sticker at the end of the session and one lucky little one was given the mascot to take home for the week. The Raglettes class was lots of fun and our little one had a brilliant time.

In the Main School class there is more emphasis on learning with children being taught acting, singing and dancing. Classes aim to improve confidence, team work and technique. Both the Main School and the Raglettes class have end of term showcases so the children can show family & friends what they have been working on. They will also both be performing at 2.45pm- 3.15pm at the Newbury Christmas Lights Switch On event on 26th November 2017!
